A luxury condo tower is giving residents Tesla vehicles to share

A new luxury tower in Chicago is trying out an innovative concept: giving its residents a garage of Tesla vehicles to drive.

Vista Tower, a high-end skyscraper condominium, is currently being constructed at the intersection of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Along with a hotel and over 400 apartments, the super-tall building will have a garage of Tesla automobiles that members can sign up to drive as part of a car sharing program, realtor.com reports.

“The car-share program provides an alternative for residents to travel beyond the local community without the commitment of leasing or owning a personal vehicle,” Leila Zammatta, senior vice president of sales at the building’s Magellan Development Group, said in a statement. “The tower will be the third-tallest building in Chicago once completed.”

Right now, Vista Tower is lined up to open in 2019 and is often heralded as an ultra-modern addition to Chicago’s skyline.

The idea, according to the development company, is to bring in homebuyers who are interested in driving more sustainably and want to have access to the latest Tesla models. While we know that residents will be able to book the time they want to drive the Tesla through a phone app, few other details have been released about how the program will work and how much it will cost.

Over the past two years, car-sharing programs have grown in popularity among urban dwellers and some experts predict that more people will shift away from owning a car in the coming decade.
