It’s a new year, but the battle among big companies for top agents remains as fierce as ever, with eXp announcing this week that it just picked up a pair of Texas teams.

In Austin, eXp has recruited the Mike Seder Group, which has been with RE/MAX for the last 25 years. The team includes Mike Seder, his wife Ally, and their sons Patrick and Brett. In total, 12 agents will make the move with the team to eXp. Additionally, Seder co-owned a RE/MAX office with Brian Schweiker, who is also making the move to eXp. Three agents and two staff members are joining Schweiker in moving.

According to a statement from eXp, the Mike Seder Group did about $259.6 million in volume, via 315 transactions, in 2022. The statement further notes that Seder has twice been the top individual agent worldwide at RE/MAX, and that the team landed multiple top rankings at its now-former company.

In the statement, Seder said his decision to join eXp “is driven by a shared vision for the future of real estate.”

“EXp’s innovative approach, technology-driven solutions, and commitment to agent success align perfectly with our values and goals,” he added. “This move empowers us to elevate the level of service we provide to our clients and expand our reach in the Houston area and Austin metroplex real estate markets.”

In addition to Seder’s team, eXp has also scored the Ronnie and Cathy Matthews Group. Ronnie and Cathy Matthews previously ran a top-ranked team at RE/MAX, but sold the team to their employees in 2016 in order to focus on other business ventures. The new Matthews Group represents the reuniting of the couple with their former colleagues and the relaunching of their team.

In total, nine agents will join Ronnie and Cathy Matthews in making the jump to eXp.

According to eXp’s statement, the Matthews have sold over 15,000 homes during their careers. Meanwhile, the team did 1,050 sides, adding up to about $391 million in volume, in 2022.

The moves come as big-name brokerages duke it out over the most productive agents. Though competition among brokerages for talent has always been fierce, the intensity has increased over the last couple of years thanks to a slowing housing market and rapidly rising mortgage rates. With transactions falling and agent ranks in decline generally, brokerages are under pressure to recruit teams and individuals with proven track records.

EXp in particular has been one of the main players in this battle for top industry talent and has recently recruited top teams in Canada, New England and Las Vegas.

In the statement, Ronnie Matthews explained the decision to join eXp, saying, “Now it is time for a new challenge.”

“EXp is the perfect opportunity,” he added, “for us to build something else great.”
