Lesson Learned: Take the leap

In this weekly column, real estate agents across the nation share stories of the lessons they’ve learned during their time in the industry.

Whether he’s hosting an episode of his podcast, spending time with family or working with clients, Aaron Masliansky naturally gravitates toward others.

As a real estate broker in Skokie and Evanston, Illinois, he has found that putting the focus on friends and neighbors in his community could pay big dividends when it came time for him to take his business to the next level. Find out why he’s a big believer in the power of forward momentum.

How long have you been in the business?

I have been a Realtor for eight years, and have been involved in real estate for 15 years. I started by first by getting a degree in urban planning, working for a real estate developer out of college for six years, and then transitioning into brokerage after the market crash.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Working globally to get people to invest locally in the Chicagoland area through my work in global real estate and by promoting my hyperlocal community of Skokie and Evanston, Illinois, through my podcast, “Inside the Skev.”

What’s one big lesson you’ve learned in real estate?

Have confidence in yourself. This is not an easy business.

How did you learn it?

I was working another job along with being a Realtor for several years. I was successful at it, but I wanted to go full-time into real estate and see if it could sustain me and how successful I could be.

It was hard to make that decision, especially going five months without a closing before I ended up going for it. The drive to make my dream a reality pushed me, along with seeing the fruits of my labor take root.

My sphere really started to work its magic: I was getting more referrals from previous clients, and I started to get more listings. Once I saw that my pipeline looked good for the upcoming couple of months, I decided to take the leap and it’s been a great decision.

It’s still stressful but incredibly rewarding. It’s fun to be an entrepreneur because you choose your own adventure.

What advice would you give to new agents?

Be persistent, open-minded, and don’t be bashful.
