SecondSpace announces new CEO

SecondSpace Inc., a company that offers a range of international property-search sites, today announced the appointment of a new president and CEO. Satbir Khanuja, who previously served as senior vice president of marketing and business development for the company, succeeds Anil H.P. Pereira, the company's founder and former CEO. Khanuja will alo sit on the company's board of directors. Pereira will "continue to serve the company as a strategic adviser as he relocates to Silicon Valley to engage in new technology endeavors," according to the announcement.  more...

Mortgage apps multiply

Mortgage applications grew 7.5 percent last week on a seasonally adjusted basis from the week before, boosted by a surge in purchase loans, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported today.

The purchase-loan index component rose 10.5 percent Aug. 22-29, followed by a 2.1 percent increase in the refinance index, according to MBA. The government purchase index comprised largely of FHA loans jumped 19.9 percent.  more...

Construction spending slides

Spending on residential construction projects in July fell 27.5 percent from a year ago, the U.S. Census Bureau reported this week. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of private residential construction was $357.8 billion in July, compared with $493.6 billion a year earlier, and was down 2.3 percent from $366.1 billion in June '08. Spending has fallen in each of the last 17 months.  more...

One of the best-known tools for gathering Web site metrics is Google Analytics. But competitors such as Visistat and Woopra are targeting real estate professionals, saying they can provide more sophisticated analysis in an easier-to-use format.

Woopra's founder and CEO John Pozadzides said that three months after launching, the company had more than 25,000 users and was monitoring 40 million page views a day.

Hedging your bet on real estate commissions

In the real estate business, a deal is not always a done deal.

There are a variety of factors that can derail a home sale, and the failure rate tends to accelerate in an environment of slumping sales and prices. That is bad news for agents, as they may invest money in marketing a home for sale with no guarantee that they will recoup that investment if the home does not sell.  more...
