Homes.com: Detroit gets big boost in searches

Real estate tech brief

Inman News

Homes.com, a real estate search site operated by Dominion Enterprises, this week launched a top-10 list of market areas with the largest growth in search activity at the site from January 2008 to January 2009.

Search traffic grew the most in Detroit (up 52 percent); followed by Naples, Fla. (44.7 percent); Greensboro, N.C. (41.6 percent); Tulsa, Okla. (41 percent); El Paso, Texas (38.4 percent); Oceanside, Calif. (37 percent); Fort Myers, Fla. (34.7 percent); Columbia, S.C. (33.9 percent); and Murrieta, Calif. (33.3 percent).

Property-search giant Realtor.com last month released search statistics from traffic to that site in December (see Inman News) that showed top search activity for a variety of markets, as well as areas that saw the largest year-over-year and month-over-month increases in search data.

And online real estate site Trulia.com released a list of most-searched areas in January based on its own data (see Inman News).

People want to find deals where they can and they look for opportunity. Let's face it people are searching in Detroit because they know there are issues in the local economy there and they are looking to profit from it.

I think that these searches allow agents to find investors in their local markets and send referrals to other agents. It is important to make sure to keep your local market informed of these stats(via your website, blog, newsletter, etc) so that you can inform, educate, and help them grow their real estate portfolios.

As an investor and wholesaler in Detroit, I have seen a very large upsurge in out of state investors coming to Detroit. The opportunities to purchase are unparalleled for the price points, quality of houses, and the strong rental market.

We're also seeing a lot of people that rush into areas that aren't good to invest in, which is why it's always good to work with a local investor and Realtor that's on the ground. There are more sales each month in Detroit and we want everyone being successful in their investments!
