The Skinny: Known by the modest name "House-On-Hill," this spectacular Tudor mansion has hosted the likes of Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and King Hussein of Jordan. Built for banking heir Celia Tobin Clark by master prewar architect David Adler, the sprawling 35,000-square-foot main house was completed in 1931. For the next 60 years it served as the Tobin-Clark family's personal castle, where they welcomed dignitaries amid extravagant period luxury.

Set on 5.9 acres in the tony San Francisco suburb of Hillsborough, House-On-Hill is one of the most impressive historic offerings available anywhere in the U.S., with 12 bedrooms, 12 full baths, three half-baths, four kitchens, 12 fireplaces, a wine vault, swimming pool, and the most grand 55-foot "music room." The asking price suits such a storied pedigree, at $29 million.
