In real estate, competition truly brings out the best in us — and when you throw in a competitive marketplace and national media attention, that’s where Fredrik Eklund, Ryan Serhant and Luis Ortiz shine. Yes, I’m talking about “Million Dollar Listing New York,” the runaway Bravo TV sensation that has most of the real estate community glued to the tube more than they’d like to admit as they watch these three agents battle it out for the biggest deals in the Big Apple.

Recently, we caught up with Luis Ortiz to talk with him about his background, the show and what it’s like to be in such a fierce competition in one of the most competitive real estate markets in the world. They say that if you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere — and with his drive, determination and desire to be on top of the industry, Ortiz certainly demonstrates his willingness and ability to succeed.

Is Ortiz perfect? No — none of us are. In our interview, he discusses being self-taught, and from what we see on-air I often find myself thinking that some of his choices would be different if he had used a coach. That’s something that you have to seek out to benefit from, however, and Ortiz’s innate self-reliance makes that something I doubt he’ll try anytime soon.

Nonetheless, Ortiz is smart, charismatic and incredibly spirited — and it seems like those qualities often carry him over obstacles on the show that might stop other agents in their tracks. Let’s face it, competing against Eklund and Serhant in the New York real estate marketplace takes a lot of courage in the first place, and to stick in their for the long haul in this battle is a testament to Ortiz’s determination and resolve. That comes through loud and clear in our interview, which you can listen to in its entirety.
