Contractors hired by banks to secure and clean up homes routinely break into distressed properties that are still owned by their occupants, The Huffington Post reports.

In response, people in more than 31 states have filed more than 250 lawsuits in the last five years against the six largest national companies that inspect and repair distressed properties, HuffPost said.
