Eve Mazzarella — a rising star in the real estate business in the Las Vegas market before she and her ex-husband were accused of orchestrating a $52 million mortgage fraud scheme — has been released from prison, after an appeals court ruled that her lawyers had raised a “substantial question of law or fact” that could lead to her 2011 conviction being overturned.
The former real estate broker had been serving a 14-year prison term at a federal prison camp in Victorville, Calif., the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Mazzarella’s ex-husband, former mortgage broker Steven Grimm, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Grimm’s lawyers are also seeking to have him released while they appeal his case.
Between 2003 and 2008, prosecutors said the couple participated in about 450 transactions involving straw buyers. Source: reviewjournal.com.
