Nearly half of foreclosed homes are currently occupied by either renters or their former owners, CNN reports, citing RealtyTrac data.

Two possible reasons:

1) Renters who signed leases with foreclosed-on owners are legally entitled to live in a home until a lease expires.

2) It takes a long time to evict someone.
