A small island community descended exclusively from slaves may be snuffed out due to a spike in property taxes, according to CNN.
The tax increases threatening the Gullah-Geechee people of Sapelo Island, which is located off Georgia’s coast near Savannah, are a result of new property appraisals that correct for errors in previous appraisals, a county attorney told CNN.
If the assessments aren’t frozen, supporters say it could eliminate a one-of-a-kind cultural community that has already suffered due to government neglect, CNN said.
