Twitter users can now receive direct messages, aka “DMs,” from any follower by checking a box in their settings that allows it. “If you check this option, any Twitter user that follows you will be able to send you a DM, regardless of whether you decide to follow them back,” reads the new Twitter settings prompt. Before now, Twitter users had to follow each other to send and receive DMs.
