The state of foreclosure prevention Premium Content

By Marcie Geffner, Thursday, October 9, 2008.

Homeowners who can't afford their mortgage payments may not find much in the way of rescue or relief in the U.S. government's $700 billion bailout of the financial markets.  more...

The greatest story ever told Premium Content

By Marc Davison, Thursday, October 9, 2008.

"Abraham and Isaac sitting on a fence, you'd get right to work if you had any sense. You know the one thing we need is a left-hand monkey wrench."
--Robert Hunter, 1971.

Friday night past, a friend e-mailed me dozens of links to live recordings of Grateful Dead shows. The interesting thing about these live recordings wasn't their sound quality (amazing) or their effect on my evening. No. What's cool about these recordings is the story behind them.  more...

Golf-course living has its drawbacks

By Janet Portman, Thursday, October 9, 2008.

Q: We rent a single-family home that's adjacent to a municipal golf course. Unfortunately, along with the views we get a daily barrage of golf balls. They fall in our yard, have dented our car and broken two windows, and I'm afraid to use the pool before sundown. Since we moved in six months ago, I've collected more than 100 balls. I want to break the lease and move, and I'm wondering if I have any legal grounds to do so. --Jack N.  more...

How stubborn tenants kill sales

By Robert Griswold, Thursday, October 9, 2008.

Q: My rental home has been for sale for more than a year. During this time, I have given my tenant a rent discount for allowing me to show the home and for the fact that he will have to move on a 30-day notice when it sells.  more...

Buying, selling or refi? New laws will help

By Tara-Nicholle Nelson, Thursday, October 9, 2008.

Q: It seems like every month the federal government passes a new housing bill that's supposed to help the real estate market crisis. I'm a homeowner, and nothing has gotten easier for me -- my mortgage payment is still about to adjust, the interest on my adjustable-rate line of credit is still going up, and I'm still upside down on my home by about $25,000! Are there any of these laws that I should really know about or that can really help me out?

A: Late last year, the federal government started responding legislatively to the upheaval in the housing market. Some argue that the resulting laws have been too little; others feel they are too late.  more...

Living in borrowed times

By Teresa Boardman, Thursday, October 9, 2008.

I am writing this today from Main Street America, the very same street that we have heard about on the news as the $700 billion financial rescue package was being discussed. I can almost see the street from my desk, but not quite.

It is lined with trees and brick buildings with shops in them. There are several restaurants, some bars, coffee shops and antique shops. The business owners I have talked to tell me that business is slow, it has been for months, and will continue to be slow in the coming months.  more...
