Want to become a real estate leader? Team leader Faith Reid writes that it starts with developing true expertise and surrounding yourself with those who elevate your performance.

After more than 30 years in real estate, people often ask me how someone becomes recognized as an industry expert in their marketplace. My answer is always the same: It doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen by accident.

Expertise is built intentionally through discipline, service and a commitment to growth over time. While every professional’s journey looks different, these principles have guided my career and can serve as a blueprint for anyone who wants to rise to the highest level in this profession. Here’s how:

Decide early that you will master the craft

The first step is deciding — not just to be in business, but to be excellent at it.

That means committing to learning the details of real estate: contracts, negotiations, market trends, financing, buyer and seller resources and the laws that govern our profession.

When you approach real estate as a craft to be mastered rather than simply a job to perform, everything changes.

Treat education as a career strategy

Education should never be an afterthought. Throughout my career, I pursued designations, certifications, leadership training and teaching opportunities because each one expanded my understanding of the industry.

Education does more than build knowledge; it builds confidence, credibility and leadership capacity. If you want to become an expert, make learning a permanent part of your career.

Surround yourself with people who raise your standards

Your professional environment matters. Seek out mentors, coaches and peers who challenge you to grow and hold you accountable to high standards.

The people around you should inspire you to become better, not comfortable staying where you are. Growth happens faster when you are surrounded by others who are committed to excellence.

Serve the profession that serves you

Real estate has provided incredible opportunities for my career and my family.

Serving the profession through leadership roles, committees and industry organizations has been one of the most rewarding parts of that journey.

When you serve the profession, you gain a deeper understanding of the forces that shape our industry, and you become part of protecting and strengthening it. Leadership service transforms professionals into stewards of the industry.

Share your knowledge generously

One of the greatest privileges of experience is the opportunity to help others grow. Teaching, mentoring and coaching allow us to multiply the impact of what we have learned.

When professionals share their knowledge, they elevate the standard of the entire profession. Your legacy will never be defined solely by the homes you sold. It will be defined by the people you helped develop along the way.

My final advice for the next generation

If you want to become an expert in your marketplace, focus less on recognition and more on growth. Study your craft. Invest in education. Serve the profession. Lift others as you climb.

Because over time, if you do those things consistently, something powerful begins to happen. Your clients trust you. Your peers respect you. Your community recognizes you.

And one day, you realize you are no longer just participating in the industry. You are helping shape it.
