Let me tell you something I’ve learned in more than 30 years of coaching agents: Choosing a brokerage is tough. But choosing to leave one? That’s often even tougher.
You weigh the pros and cons. You talk to other agents. You lose a little sleep. And then finally, you make the leap and start fresh with a new company.
Congratulations! That took courage.
But now comes the part nobody warns you about: learning their systems, rebranding yourself, restructuring your schedule, figuring out their marketing tools, rebuilding your CRM — all while you’re still trying to prospect and take care of your current clients.
I know it feels overwhelming. So, take a breath, and let’s walk through this together.
6 tips for agents changing brokerages
Tip No. 1: Get clear on what you need to learn
First things first: Know there’s going to be some anxiety. That’s normal. You’re human. The first step is simply getting it all out of your head and onto paper. Write down everything you need to learn and do. Here’s why I love this: Every time you highlight something you’ve accomplished, you get to see your progress. And momentum, my friend, is everything.
Tip No. 2: Learn things as you need them
You can’t learn everything at once. Here’s the good news: You don’t have to. Focus on what you need to know next.
Got a listing appointment in a few days? Learn how to get that client into your CRM, and upload the listing to your broker’s MLS. Holidays coming up? Learn how to send a campaign to your past clients. Handle what’s urgent, and let the rest come as you go.
Here’s the thing about learning a tool before you actually need it: It doesn’t stick. You can’t learn to ride a bike by watching videos about how the pedals work or what happens when gravity wins. The only way to learn to ride the bike is to get on the bike. Real estate is no different.
Tip No. 3: Remember — it’s a process
A musician doesn’t pick up a violin on Monday and play Carnegie Hall on Tuesday. So why do we expect ourselves to master a brand-new CRM, new systems and new marketing tools in a day?
Take it one thing at a time. Be patient with yourself. Forgive yourself when you’re slower than you’d like or when you make a mistake — because you will, and that’s called learning. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep moving.
Tip No. 4: Don’t let the learning distract you from the earning
This one’s important, so lean in. When you’re overwhelmed, it’s easy to hide inside your to-do list and forget the thing that actually builds your business: getting face-to-face and voice-to-voice with people.
Make your calls. Go on your listing appointments. Update your CRM. Learn as you go. Because if you get so buried in what you need to learn that you forget to work, that new brokerage won’t matter much, will it? Your next accomplishment is always one conversation away — so go have the conversation.
Tip No. 5: Sit down with your manager and talk priorities
Here’s a powerful move most agents never make: Ask your new manager, “What are the top three things you’d want me to learn first?” Then tell them how you learn best. Everybody learns differently, and getting on the same page from Day 1 is in everyone’s best interest.
I’ll bet you dinner their number-one answer is your CRM, because that’s where your people live: your clients, your leads, your mailings, your touchpoints with past and potential clients. If your new brokerage has an IT or tech person, buy them a coffee, and sit down together. That one hour will pay you back for years.
Tip No. 6: Love your brokerage
Whatever your reasons for making the change, here’s what really matters — more than the perks, the splits or the fancy tools: Does it feel like home?
Think about it like this. When you’re out with buyers, it doesn’t really matter if a house has hardwood floors or carpet or if it needs a fresh coat of paint. When your buyers walk in, do they feel, “This is my home”? That’s how a buyer knows which house to buy — and that’s exactly how you know which brokerage is right for you.
I’ll share something personal. In our company, we have a tradition of making a video for every team member’s work anniversary — acknowledging who they are, what they’ve accomplished and why they matter to us.
When we celebrated Camille, who’s been with us for 18 years, another team member said she’d never worked at a company where people don’t want to leave. That says something about Camille, and it says something about building a company on love.
That’s the feeling you’re looking for. Don’t settle for less.
Moving brokerages can feel like starting from scratch — but it isn’t. You’re bringing everything you’ve built: your skills, your relationships, your reputation, you. Take it one day and one thing at a time. Focus on the most urgent thing first, sit down with your manager to make a plan, and keep having the conversations that generate revenue. The rest will come, I promise.
You’ve got this. Now get out there, and take that next-level step.
