A report by Classified Intelligence, a classified advertising research and consulting company, estimates that online global classified and community network craigslist.org had $55 million in revenue last year and will bring in $81 million in revenue this year.

ClickZ.com, a tech news site, reports that craigslist.org revenue could "easily" reach $100 million with minor changes to its model, according to an interview with Classified Intelligence Principal Peter Zollman.

Craigslist charges for recruitment ads in 11 cities, according to the report. Job ads cost $25 in 10 of those cities and $75 in the San Francisco area, and craigslist also charges $10 for apartment listings by brokers in New York City.

Zollman also says in the report that Kijiji.com, a free classified Web site operated by eBay, is "aggressively and openly targeting craigslist" even though eBay owns 25 percent of craigslist.

Silicon Alley Insider, a blog focused on New York tech companies, estimates craigslist's value at $5 billion, though that number includes some major guesswork. That blog counts craigslist among the 25 "World's Most Valuable Startups," a list that has drawn criticism from several readers (including a Zillow official who questioned why that company didn't make the initial list posted at the site).

Maybe I'm showing my age, but I cannot fathom why that site is so popular. We advertise on it now and know it generates traffic... but why?

Craig's list is simple to use and you can not beat the price. It is one of the best concepts that has come along in a while. Where else can you advertise on a heavily used site for free?

It fits todays consumers who are on line.
